Americans love buying and drinking bottled water. It's convenient and lightweight, but it comes with a big price tag for the environment and consequently for each of us.
Every hour Americans dispose 2.5 million plastic bottles! That's a lot of bottles, many of which end up in the landfill or our waterways.*
Seven to eight percent of the world's fossil fuel is used to produce plastics. Fossil fuels are not a renewable resource.
If you are visiting a developing country, using plastic water bottles is a wise decision. However, most of the water in the US is treated and safe to drink so purchasing bottle water here isn't necessary. It's an expensive luxury!
Fortunately, most stores now carry a variety of stainless steel and glass bottles for carrying water. If you cannot find bottles where you live, go to E3 Living or Let's Go Green.
This is just one of many simple steps each of us can take to save money, not waste and to protect our beautiful planet.
