Plastic bottles are convenient and useful but they come with a hefty price tag for the environment and consequently for each of us as well.
Every hour we dispose of 2.5 million plastic bottles in the United States.*
Seven to eight percent of the world's fossil fuel is used to produce plastics!
Most of the water in the US is treated and potable. Not so in many developing countries where water-borne disease sickens or kills millions of people annually. If we're traveling in countries where we can't be certain about the safety of water, it makes sense to buy safe bottled water. However, in industrialized countries it's about convenience.
There is an easy solution. Stainless steel and glass bottles are easy to find in most stores these days. If you live in a rural area there are several sources for bottles online.
E 3 Living (Energy, Ecology, Economy) and Let's Go Green are just two of the many sources available.
Using stainless or glass bottles also protects you from potential BPA exposure as well.
Occasionally we have no other choice than to purchase water in plastic bottles. When you do, please be certain to recycle them.
