How do you decide which is the best way to visit friends and family and still keep your carbon footprint under control? A lot depends on whether it's just you or several of you traveling together.

Here's an example of how to determine what might be the best way to go.  Let's say there are four of you traveling 500 miles.  If you went in a standard car or SUV, you would produce less carbon per person than if you traveled by train or plane.  In a fuel-efficient car, it would be a better option. And, if you and your friends traveled by bus, you would generate 50 to 75 percent less carbon than driving.

On the other hand, if you are traveling alone or with only one other person, it would be far more fuel-efficient to travel by bus or train and to rent a car at your destination point if necessary.
